MRW Atlantic Boiler Treatment is specially formulated to protect locomotive, traction engine and other miniature steam engine boilers against scaling and corrosion. We highly recommend the use of boiler treatment in both steel and copper boilered locomotives to protect against scaling and general corrosion even with distilled and purified waters. With years of use of Tannin boiler treatments in our steel boilered 7 1/4" gauge LNER K2, we believe our all new Atlantic Boiler Treatment will give your locomotive or engine the protection it needs to continue to steam reliably for years to come.

As with all boiler treatments, regular blow downs are necessary to remove sediment from the bottom of the boiler, combined with regular washouts and general checks. The specific number of blow downs and washouts will depend on the locomotive, type of use and feedwater. As a general rule of thumb, we would recommend a blow down of a full gauge glass of water every steaming, with a complete change of water every 10 steamings along with a washout. If in doubt, communicate with your boiler inspector and please do not hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to offer advice and further information.

Description and Use
• Traditional Tannin based multifunctional treatment
• Provides corrosion and scale control
• Very cost effective
• Great for idle boiler protection
• Protection can be gauged just by the water colour
• Protects steel, copper, brass
• Does not add substantially to the boiler water alkalinity (reduces foaming risk)

Atlantic Boiler Treatment combines the traditional benefits of natural tannins as a locomotive water treatment with state-of-the-art synthetic sludge conditioners to provide excellent corrosion and scale control for heritage steam applications.

Atlantic Boiler Treatment controls corrosion by the dual mechanism of oxygen scavenging and the formation of a corrosion resistant tannate film. It prevents scale formation by converting residual hardness salts to a mobile non-adherent sludge that can be removed by regular blowdown or during wash-outs. The chemical doesn’t add greatly to the TDS and thus is perfect for boilers which are susceptible to foaming / priming causing carryover.

Atlantic Boiler Treatment is also suitable for boilers with copper components which makes it perfect for use in typical land, maritime and heritage steam boilers.

Why Use Atlantic Boiler Treatment

Atlantic Boiler Treatment is a high strength tannin boiler treatment which provides superior
protection at a dosage rate of just 1/3rd of that of competitor heritage steam products.

Using Atlantic Boiler Treatment

To provide excellent corrosion protection Atlantic Boiler Treatment should be added to the boiler at an initial dosage rate of 1 litre / 1000 litres of boiler water content. The colour of the boiler water should be that of a strong cup of tea or bitter beer. This colour should be maintained by adding additional Atlantic Boiler Treatment to the feed water tank each time it is topped up at the rate of 100 – 200ml / 1000 litres of make-up water. A certain amount of trial and error may be required to work out the optimum dosage rate.

For applications using naturally soft water (or softened water) and light usage applications then Atlantic Boiler Treatment will also provide excellent protection against limescale build up. However, for high usage hard water applications where there is a greater likelihood of scale formation we recommend that either the make-up water is softened or our alternative high alkali tannin product is used instead.

The active tannin reserve can be measured using a simple Tannin test kit.
