Miniature Lamp Kit by Colin Edmondson

£6.00Price

Designed by Colin Edmondson and although not in any way intended to be a scale model, this kit built lamp captures the feel of the real thing. The lamp is surprisingly effective, relying on tea lights or battery powered tea lights to be lit, or alternatively can be modified to use LED bicycle lights.

Miniature Lamp Kit by Colin Edmondson

A miniature tail lamp designed by the renowned Colin Edmondson as a fun little kit that can be built on the kitchen table (with the right tools)!

Product available as either:

  • Kit of parts with red disc

  • Handle former (highly recommended to achieve desired form)

The kit consists of laser cut nets that are formed either by hand or simple tools. The kit requires pop riveting together with standard 3.2mm rivets. M3 bolts can be used as an alternative but are not recommended if aiming for a neat finish. It stands 250mm from base to the top of the handle, and the body is 86mm square. The lens is 60mm diameter. As a finished product, the lamp is perfect for use on minimal style rolling stock, or a budget friendly lamp to achieve the right feel for their railway.

Dimensions

Height to Top of Handle - 250mm

Height to Top of Body - 186mm

Width - 86mm

Depth - 86mm

Lens Diameter - 60mm

The lamp is surprisingly effective, relying on tea lights means it is independent of batteries and it flickers just as it should. Enough air is drawn in through the base and out at the top to stop it getting too hot, but we have to advise that care should be taken. An alternative LED light is suggested in the instructions, or a battery tea light can also be used as safer options. You may want to pre-paint all the parts before assembly, or at least prime them, using gloss white for the final finish - the parts are supplied unpainted.

Assembly can be challenging to those unfamiliar with working with sheet metal, however each product is supplied with a full assembly guide by Colin. No dedicated sheet metal forming tools are required, though a vice is very useful for grasping the parts to achieve the correct forms. The metal is of a thin gauge and the larger parts can be worked by hand. We recommend familiarising yourself with the process before attempting a single fold!
