Available ready to run in 7 ¼ gauge. The coach is fitted with our Minimal Bogies and comes as standard with one braked bogie and one unbraked. This is a versatile coach which is the ideal vehicle for any miniature railway around the home or estate with the ability to remove the seats turning it into a Flatbed Wagon or as a bolster wagon with the addition of our Bolster Wagon Conversion Kit. The bogies can be quickly swapped with other items of rolling stock.

The Gentleman's Coach

Inspired by the ordinal Bassett Lowke passenger carriages built around the 1920’s our Gentleman’s coach is a modern interpretation of that original design with some upgrades and improvements to make them suitable for the most enjoyable afternoon trundling around the estate on your own private railway a hundred years after the initial design was first made.

This coach has been designed by the renowned Colin Edmondson to combine both functionality and appearance into one which means it's a real head turner and often the envy of other railway enthusiasts. The meticulous design means each major component can quickly be dismantled with the parts light enough to be just a one lift for easy storage and transportation. The seats simply “unclip” then the wagon frame lifts off the bogies as a one person lift. The lightweight nature of the design means it is an ideal choice for portable railways.

Different Functions

The coach is a handy piece of rolling stock for almost any miniature railway as it can quickly be converted into a Flatbed Wagon or Bolster Wagon with the aid of our conversion kit. This makes it a highly versatile vehicle which can be used to help build a railway and then enjoy it with passengers.

Paint and finish

The coach will be finished in Gray and Yellow (powder coating) unless otherwise specified at the time of ordering.

Tight curves

The Minimal Bogies fitted mean it is perfectly suited to very tight curves as found in the Jubilee (S) rad curves or the Click and Play Curves. The prototype coach has been widely used and tested on curves down to two meter radius with ease!

Wood you believe it?

Unusually for an MRW product the coach features wood as a key component, a bit of a first for MRW and one we are proud to introduce. A very prominent part of the design is the use of wood for the chassis and seats. This is a softwood which has been stained to give an appropriate appearance, hence it will benefit from periodic coats of varnish or similar wood preservative. The operator should check the product for signs of damage before use.

Feel like royalty

The original Bassett Lowke passenger coaches were famously ridden by their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary with their children at Treasure Island Railway at Wembley. You too can join Royalty and enjoy this most relaxed form of transport with our gentleman’s coach. And no it’s not just for gentlemen; ladies are most welcome too!

The Brakes

The brake is purely a parking brake emulating what would be found on this kind of vehicle in full size. If you are planning to use this coach for general passenger haulage then we would recommend you to fit a safety chain and ensure that the locomotive's brakes are adequate for your needs.

Air or Vacuum brakes?

This type of coach is not designed for commercial passenger carriage. Seating just two passengers per coach means it is better suited for use in a private garden. If you're looking for a coach to run commercially or for hauling passengers at a club then please take a look at our Edmondson 7 1/4" Gauge Commercial Carriage.

Monitoring your product

The product is regarded as maintenance free apart from the occasional drop of oil on the axleboxes, however care must be taken to ensure the carriage is in good serviceable operation. Special attention should be given to the wood for signs of rot or splitting. The operator should check the product for signs of damage before use.

What is “Minimal”

Minimal railways are small railway sthat have a genuine purpose and do a real job of work, however modest. Derived from Sir Arthur Heywood's 15” 'Minimum' gauge of 1874 onwards the term “Minimal”  was coined by Chris Stockdate around the turn of the 21st century to sum up small railways that do a real job of work in or around your garden, workshop, allotment or the like.
