EN8 Round Bar
EN8 is an engineering steel, also known as 080M40. EN8 is the ideal choice for many model engineering operations where a bright finish is required and wear and strength are both considerations. It is a harder metal to machine/turn than normal mild steel but has much better wear resistance making it an ideal choice for locomotive/carriage axles. EN8 is also widely used for locomotive wheels and can be hardened/heat treated to add wear resistance.
It is suitable for shafts, stressed pins, key's and various other applications.

EN8 Round Bar 60cm Lengths

The finish is bright and has a very good tolerance of +0mm to -0.085mm. During cutting and packaging we do occasionally mark the steel when being held in clamps etc... If the finish of the steel is critical to your requirements please let us know before/soon after placing your order and we will make sure that the minimum of marks from clamping are made on your order.
Turning EN8 on the Lathe
In the model engineer’s workshop where the spindle speed is often much lower than modern day production environments a HSS (high speed steel) tool is often well suited to achieving a fine finish. Carbide Tipped Tools can also be used with great success but these tips prefer higher speeds than can be achieved with older lathes and also prefer to be flooded with coolant. Depending on your home set up and what finish you require either a tungsten or HSS tool can both be used and for more info we recommend you take a look at the Model Engineer forum page that goes into much more detail. https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=97358
