Using the taps and dies
The taps and dies are suitable for use with the large majority of commonly used model engineering metals, however if you do have material specific questions please do not hesitate to contact us. To prolong tool life and improve cutting quality and accuracy, we strongly recommend.....

CARBON OR HIGH SPEED STEEL; WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
The bottom line is price and quality. A HSS tool will cost more, but last longer and stay sharper for longer, whereas a CS tool will cost less and dull faster.

Your scenario and budget will determine if a CS or HSS tap/die is right for you needs. For power tapping, we advise that only HSS taps are used. Whilst carbon steel is excellent for low speed hand tapping, it dulls quickly if forced through a workpiece. HSS on the other hand remains hard up to hot temperatures and is a much better choice for power tapping applications. Our full range of taps and dies are available in both carbon steel and HSS.
